The Prophet

I guess I knew it from that day, it seems like it was a lifetime ago.

We were strangers then.

Then again, we are strangers now.

Waif thin, her eyes were red and swollen from having cried too much. We sat next to an empty street while the night wind blew through us. We spoke about life and things and tried to make sense of the everything we'd lost.

My hand brushed against her back. There were no words I could say to ease her loss, but I hoped that the comfort of human touch would sooth some of the burning grief.

In the recesses
You will fall in love with this woman, and she will destroy your feeble heart. 

I whispered. I will make her happy for as long as I can. Then I will fade away. 

"Fool" they said. 

And I held her hand as we continued to speak through the night.
